They promised to walk every day for a year. No matter the weather, no matter the mood.

Day 4, it rained. They walked in the rain.

Day 47, one wanted to quit. The other waited at the corner at 6 AM anyway. They walked without talking.

Day 182, they walked in a new city, on a trip they had not planned when they made the promise.

The walk was never the point. The promise was.

At the end of the year, they had walked 365 times. They had also not missed a single day they said they would show up for each other. That record — more than the miles — is what they carry now.

When people ask how they stayed consistent, they say: we did not keep a walking habit. We kept a promise to a friend. The habit was just what the promise looked like from the outside.

Proof over noise: community is not found. It is kept, one walk at a time.
