Calm is not a personality you either have or you do not. Calm is a state your body can be guided into, on purpose, in under two minutes.
When stress rises, breathing shortens. When breathing shortens, the brain hears danger. It is a loop that feeds itself — unless you interrupt it at the body.
The fastest interruption is a longer exhale.
Not a deep inhale. A slow, complete exhale. The exhale tells your nervous system: we are safe enough to let go.
Try it now:
- Inhale through the nose for 4 counts.
- Exhale through the mouth for 8 counts, as if fogging a mirror slowly.
- Repeat 6 times. Two minutes total.
Do not try to feel calm. Just count. The feeling follows the counting, not the other way around.
Use it before the meeting, after the argument, between tasks. It is portable, free, and always available — which is why we forget to use it.
Two minutes of breath is not a luxury. It is maintenance for the instrument that has to carry you through the whole day.
